Director’s Word
Abdoulaye Djimdé
Dear Visitors,
It is with a deep sense of responsibility and continuity that I welcome you to the official website of the Parasites and Microbes Research and Training Center (PMRTC).
Our laboratory is best known for our work on malaria.
But our master, Professor Ogobara Doumbo, the visionary that he was, had already understood that we had to look beyond malaria, that we had to broaden our group’s interests. And he had already put into action a number of activities, including training young people in infectious diseases in human culture to equip the center with human resources capable of supporting this new vision of going beyond malaria.

To continue our interest in other parasitic diseases, it is not often said, but we have continued to work since the creation of this laboratory on other parasites such as schistosomiasis, leishmaniasis, and mycoses.
Many other tropical parasites are being researched here at our center, as well as bacterial, viral, and fungal diseases. Recent outbreaks of COVID-19, dengue fever, and reported cases of Zika and chikungunya are reminders that the signs we often see are not always due to malaria. So it’s important that we equip ourselves to distinguish between what is due to malaria and what is due to other sources of fever.
And it is with this in mind that, during the laboratory reforms initiated by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, we decided to evolve the vision and focus of our center. A vision that goes beyond malaria to focus more on other parasitic and infectious diseases, a fact that is further enhanced by our new name. Instead of the Malaria Research and Training Center, we are now called the Parasites and Microbes Research and Training Center (PMRTC).
This change is part of a dynamic of renewal and adaptation to current health challenges. It is symbolized by our new name, which clearly demonstrates the expansion of our mission.
We will continue to train, research, and innovate with the same commitment and passion.
Thank you for your interest and trust.
